Automotive Exhaust Systems

Polycrystalline alumina fiber materials can provide thermal isolation and support around exhaust-treatment components. The mounting system must be designed for the substrate, canning gap and duty cycle.

A mounting mat is a functional component

AFIBRE describes non-intumescent polycrystalline fiber mats for catalytic-converter and particulate-filter assemblies. Their role includes supporting and sealing a ceramic substrate while limiting heat transfer to the outer shell.

Automotive production line with vehicle bodies
Vehicle applications require qualification of the complete exhaust mounting system.

Select by installed behavior

Nominal thickness and areal weight are only the starting point. Compression, gap bulk density, erosion resistance and pressure retention under thermal cycling determine whether a mat is suitable for a particular canning arrangement.

Define the qualification plan

  • Substrate dimensions, wall construction and permitted contact pressure.
  • Canning method, cold and hot gap, and tolerance stack-up.
  • Temperature cycles, exhaust flow and expected vibration.
  • Required retention, leakage, erosion and durability tests.

Confirm the exact supply grade

Generic needled-blanket data must not be substituted for an automotive mounting-mat data sheet. Identify the manufacturing site, grade and required quality documentation before procurement.

Catalytic converter mounting applications

Rongrong identifies alumina fiber needled blanket for three-way catalytic converter liners. In a mounting system, the mat must accommodate the gap between the catalyst substrate and its housing. Specify installed compression, thermal expansion and vibration conditions when evaluating a candidate construction.
